Why a steel staircase is a better choice than concrete

Whether you’re considering a new staircase for a domestic or a commercial property, it’s an important decision and one of the most important things you’ll need to decide upon is what material it will be made from. This is a decision that should not be taken lightly, as once the staircase is in place it is very difficult to change (and expensive too). So take some time to think through your options carefully, and consult with experts to make sure that your ideas are not only possible but also economical and safe.

Staircases are usually built from steel or concrete, and increasingly steel is becoming the most popular choice for many people. This isn’t just because of its durability and affordability, but also because it can look really attractive too. When deciding on your type of staircase you need to strike the delicate balance between functionality and form, and the material you choose is an essential element of this. But why choose steel? Here’s why!

 It’s really robust

Steel staircases are strong and durable, and has very high tensile strength. This means it is exceptionally good for load-bearing. If you’re looking at an external staircase, then there really can be no alternative to steel. It’s around five times stronger than concrete or indeed wooden staircases. It’s also very safe and can be galvanised so that it is impervious to corrosion and will stand up to a wide range of weather conditions. And because it can be fabricated off-site, less time will be needed on-site which keeps things safe and speedy.

 It’s versatile

If you’re using concrete for your stairs then you are really limited with your options when it comes to design details such as balustrades, handrails, treads and cladding, as well as the layout itself. Steel offers a far more versatile alternative as it can be designed and fabricated into lots of different styles and shapes to create something truly unique and also entirely fit for purpose.

 It’s easy

While concrete is difficult to manipulate or cast with any accuracy, it’s easy to work within the most precise measurements with steel. That means that your staircase will be built to perfection with absolutely no compromise on style, shape or indeed safety.

 It’s cheap

Best of all, steel is a really economic choice, being cheaper than most wood, concrete or any other staircase-building material. Because so many components can be sourced externally or built off-site, ready to be assembled, time on site is kept to an absolute minimum saving you labour costs and improving on-site safety.
