Benefits of using stainless steel in construction

Stainless steel is one of the most popular materials used in construction, and no wonder as it offers such a wealth of benefits. Stainless steel used to be called ‘rustless steel’, which gives you a very good idea as to why it’s so widely used. Stainless steel can be one of a group of ferrous alloys, but to qualify as ‘stainless’, the alloy must contain a minimum of around 11% chromium. So, what are the main benefits of using stainless steel in construction?

Strength and durability

Stainless steel is used in major developments such as bridges and large buildings, because it is so strong and durable. It retains its strength at both low and high temperatures, so it can withstand huge amounts of pressure and weight, and it can and will remain in place for a very long time without corroding or losing strength. It is therefore a very economical choice of construction material too, because it won’t need replacing for a very long time to come.

Aesthetics

Stainless steel doesn’t rust and can be polished up to give off a beautiful shine. Because of this, when aesthetics are an important consideration it is a very popular choice. Shiny stainless steel reflects the light and beauty around it which can create a modern, eye-catching visual effect.

Flexibility and versatility

If you’re looking to create a quirky and unique structure, then stainless steel is one of the best choices you could consider. It can be bent and moulded into different shapes really easily, without compromising on strength or durability. For that reason, it’s great for applications such as staircases, as well as balconies and railings.

Sustainability

Stainless steel is a great choice when you are considering the sustainability of your building materials. It is made from around 70% scrap metal, and it’s also 100% recyclable and it won’t leach toxic chemicals during the recycling process, either. These factors make it an exceptionally planet-friendly choice for people who want to consider the environment in their material choices.

Hygiene

Since the pandemic, it has never been more important to consider the hygiene implications of the construction materials that you use. Stainless steel is easy to clean, and, because of its non-porous surface, it’s very difficult for dirt, grime and bacteria to take hold. That’s why so many commercial kitchens are constructed largely in stainless steel. When hygiene is an important consideration, stainless steel is by far the best choice.

When it comes to the disadvantages of stainless steel, people often cite its cost. It may be slightly more expensive than similar materials, but there is absolutely no doubt that it’s the most cost-effective material in the long run. Other materials will rust, corrode and lose strength over time, but stainless steel will stand the test of time.
