How to make your metal gate or balcony last longer

A gate or balcony made of metal will be able to withstand the elements, as well as any accidental damage.

However, like all things, metal gates and balconies don’t last forever.

If you’ve ever wondered how to keep your steel gate or balcony looking good for longer, this short guide will help.

What is the lifespan of a metal gate or balcony?

Steel gate and balcony lifespan: Steel is strong, durable, and cost-effective, making it a great option for gates and balconies. When looked after, steel fabrications can last from 35 to 50 years.

Stainless steel gate and balcony lifespan:

Stainless steel is an alloy made of steel and chrome. The great thing about stainless steel is it’s strong and doesn’t rust. A stainless steel gate or balcony can last for over 50 years if taken care of.

Iron gate and balcony lifespan:

Wrought iron is an iron alloy with a low carbon content, which when heated, is extremely malleable. It’s the perfect choice for decorative and intricate gates and balconies. Wrought iron fences look great for up to ten years but can last a lot longer with a little extra care.

How to expand the lifespan of your balcony or gate

Keep your balcony or gate clean

Regularly cleaning your gate or balcony will remove any dirt or debris, reducing the chance of rust and weak spots appearing.

You don’t need specialist cleaning equipment; a soft cloth and warm soapy water will do the job.

Avoid scratches

Scratches not only weaken your gate or balcony but can cause rust to form. Avoid cleaning your gate or balcony with abrasive equipment, and do what you can to prevent cars, trees, and animals from scratching your metal gate or balcony.

Add a fresh coat of paint

Painting your gate or balcony not only makes it look nice but also creates a barrier that stops rust and scratches.

Remove any rust with a wire brush, then apply a primer designed for outdoor use. You can then apply paint with either a brush or spray gun.

Touch up any chipped paint where possible to protect your gate or balcony and make it last longer.

Regularly inspect your balcony or gate

It’s easier to make small repairs than it is to replace a whole gate or balcony!

Visually check your gate or balcony once a month and see if anything needs to be fixed.
